Gambling in Australia
Australia is the gambling capital of the world.
Australians lose more than $24 billion a year to gambling.
Australia averages around 240,000 people experiencing a level of harm from Internet and phone gambling.
For ever person that gambles, the knock on effect sees on average 10 other people affected.
During the lockdown period, Internet and phone gambling saw an increase of 67 percent.
What is BetStop?
The National Self Exclusion Register or BetStop as it is known commercially, is a self-banning tool for users who want to take a break or permanently ban themselves from all online and telephone gambling in Australia.
BetStop is an Australian Government initiative, legislated under the Interactive Gambling act 2001. The legislation defines how the register works both technically and operationally.
BetStop is funded online and telephone gambling companies that are required to integrate with the register.
The legislation ruled that any person who registered on BetStop would:
Close all accounts registered with any Australian online and telephone gambling companies.
Be blocked from creating a new account for a minimum of three months.
Be unable to cancel self-exclusion for a minimum of three months.
Cease to have direct marketing sent to them from gambling companies.
Stakeholders
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) oversees BetStop and was the primary stakeholder. Throughout the process, we would be responsible for educating them through the research and how it drove my designs..
All online and telephone gambling companies were required to integrate with BetStop. This saw our team conduct multiple stakeholder workshops to understand their needs so that they would be be fully compliant with the platform.

How I designed
My designs were driven by:

User testing through Figma prototypes and test builds.
